Some of my clients tell me they want to incorporate spirituality into their mental health journey. They tell me that therapy combined with faith is the best way to feel extra support, comfort, and guidance while they make sense of what life has thrown their way. I like to recommend Lysa TerKeurst’s book for those faith leaning clients because she does a nice job of connecting real life situations (like having a severe health issue AND simultaneously finding out about her partner having an affair) with scripture and prayers.
The format of the book feels like the author is sitting at the dinner table with you sharing a cup of tea and then provides Bible verses and prayers at the end of each chapter. So many of my clients grew up with religion as part of their family of origin and may be experiencing challenges to their faith because of the current circumstances they find themselves in. This book doesn’t ignore the fact that doubts can arise in every hard season. TerKeurst doesn’t shame, guilt, or minimize the value in experiencing those emotions and questions.
