You need to expect that a therapist would put a book by this globally recognized leader on this list of recommended readings. Brené Brown has been instrumental in starting so many conversations about mental health and the inner critic. She normalized the idea that we all have a tiny, unhappy, ever-present voice inside that is slowly killing us. Worse, it’s keeping us disconnected from one another and creating profound and harmful consequences.
As a therapist, who often has a front row to the aftermath of this disconnect, it is painful to see client after client come into my office with the same sense of failure and low self-esteem. So many of my clients firmly believe the lie their broken thinking tells them. They buy into the myth that they are only valuable and loveable if they are perfect.
I want to hand this book to every person I meet and just pray that we can work on changing the thinking about themselves that leads to much disfunction and pain. Brene’s message normalizes and connects us with the actual truth of our worth, which I can only hope will make a dent in challenging all of our internal critics.
