Three Dads and a Baby: Adventures in Modern Parenting by Ian Jenkins, MD

Three Dads and a Baby: Adventures in Modern Parenting by Ian Jenkins, MD

I was reading our local newspaper one day and saw an article about a San Diego based throuple who were being featured for their journey to became surrogate fathers. As you can imagine, they faced mountains of legal and societal constraints in order to accomplish their goal of becoming fathers. It was very important that all three fathers could be recognized for their role in their children’s lives. This book is full of humor and wisdom, also provided detailed steps about how these parents changed the way California viewed adoption law. Even though this book has a feel good outcome, it also left me often frustrated at the many injustices these loving partners had to deal with at almost every juncture.
We were lucky enough to have two of the dads, Ian and Jeremy, come and hang out with us for lunch and a chat at our book club recently. Both of these warm and generous spirited men were not only incredibly tall, but also super down to earth and inspirational to all of the therapists in attendance. The way they were able to navigate their challenges with grace, humor, and passion makes the book a great way to look at relationships in ways many of us may not have considered. I was also able to interview Ian as well for the podcast, so if you haven’t had a chance to listen yet go check out episode:
